(1)THE NORTHERN MOUNTAINS:
NORTHERN MOUNTAINS:
A series of worlds highest mountains collectively know as the Himalayas lie in the north-east of Pakistan. Himalayas lying stretched like a bow in the north of south Asian subcontinent have a length of about 2700 km and are know as the 'roof of the world'.this magnificent mountain range is further divided into four ranges of different altitude namely.
(1)THE SUB HIMALAYAS OR THE SHIWALIK RANGE:
hills between 600 to 900 meters of altitude (height from sea level) extend over the southern part of Hazara and murree and include the hills of Rawalpindi and the pubbi hills.
(2)THE PIR PANJAL RANGE:
This series of also known as the outer or the lesser Himalayas,lie further to the north and mostly run parallel to the shiwalik Hills. this range has an average altitude of 4200 to 4500 meters. murree and hazara hills from a part of it. in the winter, the peaks remaib snow capped but summers are very pleasant, vegetation and forests are abundant, and add to the scenic beauty and attract tourism.
(3)THE CENTRAL HIMALAYAS:
To the further nort the central Himalayas lie between the Pir Panjal and the karakoram range at an average height of 6000 meters. most of the mountain peaks in central Himalayas remain covered with snow throughout the year.Nanga Parbat is the highest and a very famous peak of this range, it is 26660 feet high. the beautiful Kashmir valley lies between the Pir Panjal and the greater Himalayas.
(4)THE KORAKORAM RANGE:
The famous korakoam range lies to the north of the central Himalayas and forms a part of the Northern Kashmir and Gilgit. Korakoram Mountain has an average of 7000 meters above sea level. it extends 400 km from hunza to shyok. worlds second highest mountain peak and a great tourist and mountaineers attraction, the Mount Godwin Austin commonly known as K2 lies in this range.K2 is 28251 feet high. it is situated near Gilgit.
(2)THE WESTERN MOUNTAINS (North-Western and South-Western):
Western Mountains, like the Northern Mountains, comprise several parallel ranges but they are not as high as the Himalayas. this series include the following ranges.
(1) THE HINDU KUSH MOUNTAIN RANGE:
The Hindu kush constitutes the main range of the western border mountains.in the north.Most of these ranges are located in Afghanistan. In Pakistan territory they send off a number of branches south towards chitral,Dir and Swat. Trich Mir peak in the north is the highest peak of range (about 7700 meters). these peaks remain snow-capped throughout the year. the hight decreases southwards in Mohmand territory and Malaknd hills to only 1500 meters. south of the river Kabul, the north-south strike changes to the west-east aligned safed Koh Range.
(2)SAFED KOH RANGE:
Mountains of this range are located in the south of the Kabul river. they lie in east-west direction. their height range up to 3600 meters above sea level. they are called white mountains (safed koh)because their peaks are always covered with snow. river Kurrum lies to the south of this range and the Kurrum pass provides a route into Afghanistan.Kohat valley is located at the end of the Kurrum pass.
(3)WAZIRISTAN HILLS:
Forming a rampart between Pakistan and Afghanistan, Waziristan Hills lie between the Gomal and kurrun rivers along the Safed Koh. This area is near rich in mineral wealth.wealth. Bannu near Tochi pass and Dera lsmail khan near Gomal pass are the two most important towns of the area. kurrum Dam and the kurrum river are the main sources of irrigation in the Bennu valley.lying to the south of the Kabul River is the fertile valley of Peshawar. This valley is irrigated by the River swat and from the warsak dam,built on the River Kabul.
(4)SULAIMAN RANGE:
the sulaiman range lie west of the river indus. takht-e-sulaiman is the highest peak in this range. (3535 metres.)
(5)KIRTHAR RANGE:
To the south of the sulaiman Range is located the kirthar range.
